[B] Family
[P] The Nature of Family
  • cannot be had without children 99:4.2(1089;5)
  • founded on 7 facts 142:7.5-12(1603;6)
  • ideals of 84:7sec(939;4)
  • man and woman adjusting their antagonisms 68:2.8(765;5), 84:7.30(942;1)
  • members reap benefits, suffer consequences of others' actions 12:7.11(138;6), 54:5.5(617;5), 54:6.3-4(618;6), 67:7sec(760;6), 145:2.8(1630;4)
  • sex hunger and mother love establish 70:3.2(787;2)
  • temporal institution; does not survive death 140:8.14(1581;1)
[P] The Value of Families
  •  loyalty to and watchcare over f. is the most sacred human trust 126:3.5(1389;8), 127:2.8(1397;6), 127:5.3(1403;1), 140:8.14(1581;1), 196:0.7(2088;2)
  • position accorded f. in China creates stability 79:8.9(888;2)
  • almost everything of lasting value has roots in 68:2.8(765;5), 79:8.9(888;2), 140:8.14(1581;1)
  • built on tolerance, patience, forgiveness 84:7.28(941;9), 142:7.11(1604;6)
  • earthly f. illustrates the heavenly 142:7.4(1603;5)
  • most effective social group; master civilizer 82:0.2(913;2), 160:2.4(1775;5)
  • reveals to parents Creator's attitude to his children 84:7.30(942;1)
  • P941:10, 84:7.29 Human society would be greatly improved if the civilized races would more generally return to the family-council practices of the Andites. They did not maintain the patriarchal or autocratic form of family government. They were very brotherly and associative, freely and frankly discussing every proposal and regulation of a family nature. They were ideally fraternal in all their family government. In an ideal family filial and parental affection are both augmented by fraternal devotion.
  • P942:1, 84:7.30 Family life is the progenitor of true morality, the ancestor of the consciousness of loyalty to duty. The enforced associations of family life stabilize personality and stimulate its growth through the compulsion of necessitous adjustment to other and diverse personalities. But even more, a true family -- a good family -- reveals to the parental procreators the attitude of the Creator to his children, while at the same time such true parents portray to their children the first of a long series of ascending disclosures of the love of the Paradise parent of all universe children.
[P] Marriage
  • P941:9, 84:7.28 Marriage, with children and consequent family life, is stimulative of the highest potentials in human nature and simultaneously provides the ideal avenue for the expression of these quickened attributes of mortal personality. The family provides for the biologic perpetuation of the human species. The home is the natural social arena wherein the ethics of blood brotherhood may be grasped by the growing children. The family is the fundamental unit of fraternity in which parents and children learn those lessons of patience, altruism, tolerance, and forbearance which are so essential to the realization of brotherhood among all men.
[P] Succession (inheritance)
  •  obligation to transmit legitimate wealth to succeeding generations 69:9.3(780;6), 132:5.5(1463;3)
  • P941:8, 84:7.27 In the present industrial and urban era the marriage institution is evolving along new economic lines. Family life has become more and more costly, while children, who used to be an asset, have become economic liabilities. But the security of civilization itself still rests on the growing willingness of one generation to invest in the welfare of the next and future generations. And any attempt to shift parental responsibility to state or church will prove suicidal to the welfare and advancement of civilization.
[P] Threats to Families
  •  rising tide of self-gratification is threat to 84:8.1(942;2)
  • warnings
    • avoid all deception; refrain from suspicion 140:5.14(1574;7)
    • bad environment can spoil excellent inheritance, at least during younger years 76:2.6(848;6)
    • error to teach boys tenderness is unmanly 140:5.16(1575;1)
    • do not force ready-made adult religious experience on child 100:1.3(1094;5)
    • insubordination caused by protecting children from consequences of foolish conduct 84:7.20)
    • John Zebedee humored too much; spoiled 139:4.5(1554;3)
    • Judas was pampered, petted, spoiled 139:12.6(1566;5), 193:4.6(2056;4)
    • never take sides in children's quarrels; show no partiality 128:1.14(1409;4), 141:3.3(1589;4)
    • overindulgence adds to delinquency and demoralization; encompasses moral undoing 147:5.9(1653;3), 177:2.2(1921;6)
    • overprotection harmful; allow child to have original experience 177:2.2-4(1921;6)
    • overprotection makes child self-conscious, self-centered 123:0.2(1355;2)
    • pressure unhelpful; does not stimulate growth 103:5.11(1135;1)
    • shortsighted affection pampers and spoils 118:10.1(1304;3)
    • suicidal to shift responsibility to state or church 84:7.27(941;8)
[P] The Family of God

[P] Child Rearing
  • best if close in ages 55:3.10(625;9)
  • discipline favorable; love restrains unwise acts 66:7.5(750;7), 127:4.3(1401;3), 142:2.4(1597;4), 142:7.9(1604;4), 143:1.4(1608;1), 177:2.7(1923;1), 188:4.10(2017;5)
  • help select heroes and lifework 140:5.14(1574;7)
  • introduce to worship in nature's outdoors 167:6.6(1840;5)
  • permanently impressed only by adults' loyalties 100:1.4(1094;6)
  • punishment necessary when very young 142:2.4(1597;4)
  • let compassion be part of all punishment 131:9.4(1453;2)
  • punishment as corrective affection 142:2.4(1597;4)
  • restraint of child's unwise acts 143:1.4(1608;1), 177:2.7(1923;1)
  • indispensable parent-child relation 45:6.4(516;2), 84:7.4(939;7)
  • wise fathers chasten in love for correction 142:7.9(1604;4), 188:4.10(2017;5)
  • whom the Lord loves he corrects 148:5.5(1662;2)
  • religion depends on whether fear or love dominates parent-child relationship 92:7.7(1013;2), 103:2.3(1131;2), 177:2.2(1921;6)
  • should grow up conscious of being God's children 103:2.2-10(1131;1)
  • should honor parents 66:7.15(751;10), 93:4.13(1018;2), 131:2.12(1446;1), 149:6.6(1675;7), 153:3.3(1712;3), 163:2.4(1801;7)
  • P801:10, 71:1.14 The great weakness in Roman civilization, and a factor in the ultimate collapse of the empire, was the supposed liberal and advanced provision for the emancipation of the boy at twenty-one and the unconditional release of the girl so that she was at liberty to marry a man of her own choosing or to go abroad in the land to become immoral. The harm to society consisted not in these reforms themselves but rather in the sudden and extensive manner of their adoption. The collapse of Rome indicates what may be expected when a state undergoes too rapid extension associated with internal degeneration.
  • P941:2, 84:7.21 Eskimo children thrive on so little discipline and correction simply because they are naturally docile little animals; the children of both the red and the yellow men are almost equally tractable. But in races containing Andite inheritance, children are not so placid; these more imaginative and adventurous youths require more training and discipline. Modern problems of child culture are rendered increasingly difficult by:
P941:3, 84:7.22 1. The large degree of race mixture.
    P941:4, 84:7.23 2. Artificial and superficial education.
P941:5, 84:7.24 3. Inability of the child to gain culture by imitating parents -- the parents are absent from the family picture so much of the time.

  • P941:7, 84:7.26 Civilization regards the parents as assuming all duties, the child as having all the rights. Respect of the child for his parents arises, not in knowledge of the obligation implied in parental procreation, but naturally grows as a result of the care, training, and affection which are lovingly displayed in assisting the child to win the battle of life. The true parent is engaged in a continuous service-ministry which the wise child comes to recognize and appreciate.

  • Jesus' practices
    • children had regular duties in Jesus' household 126:5.11(1393;8)

    • no penalty for violation of personal teachings 127:4.5(1401;5)
